Controls

Two key presets, a fifteen-slot hotbar, Smart Cast — and every one of them can be rebound.

Presets

The client ships two keyboard presets. Modern is the default for new characters: WASD walks, the number keys and the letters around them cast, E takes and uses. Legacy restores the classic Astonia layout for players who grew up with it: no keyboard walking, spells on A/S/D/F/G, Escape cancels and F10 opens the menu. Switch between them in Options → Gameplay → Keybindings; anything can then be rebound per key, with undo, and the result is saved per character in thy user profile — Steam updates never touch it.

Mouse buttons 4 and 5 (the side buttons) can be bound like keys. A key already in use is reported in chat when thou bindest it elsewhere.

Hotbar — first row

The first hotbar row is pre-filled for a new character (spells the class cannot cast are removed at login). Number keys 7–0 remain as alternates for slots 7–10.

The hotbar

The hotbar has up to three rows of fifteen slots. Drag spells onto it from the spellbook, drag items from the inventory, and drag slots around to rearrange them. Item slots refill themselves and show a count; the Potions and Recall slots are generic — any size of potion or any level of recall scroll matches, so the slot keeps working as thou upgradest. A fresh character starts with a recall scroll and a healing potion on the bar; fighters get six slots, casters fifteen, and the bar only offers spells the character can actually cast.

Each slot has a primary key and can take extra binds. By default, Shift + key is a quick cast and Ctrl + key casts on a character with the indicator — for spells that support targets.

Casting modes

How a targeted spell fires from a hotkey is a global setting (with per-bind overrides):

Mode Behaviour
Smart Cast (default) Press the key: if a valid target is under the cursor the spell fires at once; otherwise the cursor enters targeting mode and the next click casts.
Normal Press the key, the cursor changes, click the target to cast.
Quick Cast Press the key and the spell casts instantly at the cursor position.
Quick Cast with Indicator Hold the key to see the target indicator, release to cast.

Tip: Fireball and Ball Lightning default to casting at the map position under the cursor; Heal and Bless default to thyself. Ball Lightning keeps flying after it passes its target — aim slightly to the side when the geometry allows.

Mouse

Left-click is the main action, right-click always looks and never does anything dangerous. Hold Shift to focus on objects and items, Ctrl to focus on characters and creatures.

Target Left-click Right-click
Map tile Walk there Look at the ground
Shift + map tile Use the item or object Look at the object
Ctrl + map tile Attack the character or creature Look at it
Shift + map tile, item in hand Use the held item on the object Look at the object
Ctrl + map tile, item in hand Give the held item to the character Look at the character
Inventory item Use it — or sell it to a merchant / store it in an open depot Look at it
Shift + inventory or worn item Take it into hand Look at it
Shift + inventory item, item in hand Swap the two items Look at it
Worn item Move it back to the inventory (lights torches) Look at it
Spellbook entry Drag it onto a hotbar slot Look at the spell
Hotbar slot Use / cast; drag to move slots Look at the slot
Party frame Locate the member Member menu

The minimap zooms with the mouse wheel, pans with a right-drag, and a click flips it between the round map and the large square map. Windows are dragged by their title bar and snap to the screen edges and to each other.

Controllers and Steam Deck

A gamepad navigates the whole interface with on-screen hints; the launcher offers a fullscreen console mode on the Steam Deck and hides itself while the game runs. Controller bindings live in Options → Gamepad.
