Weather

Rain, storms and snow follow the seasons, slow thy feet, cloud thy sight — and sometimes strike.

Seasons

The world weather changes every 30 to 60 minutes; the game's calendar decides the season, the season decides the odds. Each kind comes in three intensities (light, moderate, heavy).

Season Clear Rain Storm Snow
Spring 45 % 35 % 20 % 0 %
Summer 70 % 15 % 15 % 0 %
Autumn 35 % 40 % 25 % 0 %
Winter 35 % 5 % 10 % 50 %

What the weather does to thee

Outdoors only — step under a roof or into a dungeon and every effect stops. Sight is thy visible range; speed is thy walking speed.

Weather Light Moderate Heavy Also
Rain speed 95 %, sight 90 % speed 90 %, sight 80 %, perception −5 speed 80 %, sight 70 %, perception −10 Wet: slightly slower attacks; chance to slip.
Storm speed 90 %, sight 80 %, perception −5, lightning 5 %/min speed 80 %, sight 60 %, perception & stealth −10, lightning 15 %/min speed 70 %, sight 40 %, perception & stealth −15, lightning 30 %/min Wet, weaker attacks and spells; lightning strikes.
Snow speed 90 %, sight 85 %, stealth +5 speed 80 %, sight 70 %, perception −5, stealth +10 speed 70 %, sight 55 %, perception −10, stealth +15 Cold: slower attacks, but snow muffles thy steps.

Lightning

Storms strike, but the weather is ambience, not an executioner:

  • A strike takes roughly 6 %, 12 % or 20 % of thy maximum health for a light, moderate or heavy storm (plus up to a quarter more, and never less than a sting).
  • It never takes thee below a quarter of thy maximum health, and leaves thee alone if thou art already below it.
  • It never strikes on rest areas, peace tiles or arenas, nor indoors.

Where it rains

Only outdoor regions have weather; everything not listed here — dungeons, mines, sewers, Grimroot, the Long Tunnel, Teufelheim, Caligar, Arkhata, clan halls — is always dry:

Cameron · Cameron outskirts · Aston · the Swamp · the Forest · Staffer Isle / Dragon's Breath · Brannington Forest · Brannington · the second Live Quest area · Wolfe Pit.

The Nomad Plains and the first Live Quest area are desert: their sandstorms and fog exist in the code but are switched off for now.

On thy screen

The client draws rain, wind-driven streaks, lightning flashes and snow, with a small weather indicator, and plays rain, wind and thunder on their own volume slider (Options → Audio → Ambient). /weather reports the current conditions; #weather toggle switches the on-screen effects off, #weather indicator hides the indicator, #weather status prints the client state.

Coming with a content update: regional day/night ambience and creature voices are implemented but their sound files are not yet in the content pack. They switch on with a content update — no client update needed.
